Some people use statistics to try to figure out their chance of getting cancer or of being cured. However, statistics show only what happens in large groups of people. Because no two people are the same, you cannot use them to predict what might happen to you.

The following are 2007 statistics about gallbladder cancer from the American Cancer Society.

  • About 9,200 people in the United States will be told they have gallbladder cancer this year.

  • Twice as many women get gallbladder cancer as men. And more white women than black women get it.

  • Mexican Americans and Native Americans are more likely to develop gallbladder cancer than the population as a whole.

  • Most people with gallbladder cancer are older than age 70.

  • Gallbladder cancer is usually found only when it is advanced enough to cause symptoms. Only about 25% of gallbladder cancers are discovered in the early stages.

  • About 3,200 Americans will die of gallbladder cancer this year. The numbers of cases and deaths in the United States from gallbladder cancer are dropping.
