The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) offers subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine to board-certified specialists in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. It is a different subspecialty than Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, which is a subspecialty of Orthopaedic Surgery. Sports Medicine specialists are qualified to provide medical coverage for athletic events for school age and professional athletes. Sports Medicine specialists are qualified to treat individuals with sports, fitness or recreational-activity-related injuries.
