Two factors to consider when setting up a strength-training program are the type of muscle contraction you will use for an exercise and the kind of biomechanics to move the involved joints. The type of muscle contraction determines the potential tension developed within the muscle, its response to training, and possible soreness after workouts. Similarly, if your movement is dictated by a fixed path, such as with a weight machine, there may be a different response than if you move a resistance freely.
