CHAPTER 4 | BUILDING STRENGTH
publisher: Human Kinetics

Hypertension

If you have high blood pressure but your blood pressure is under control, you can participate safely in resistance training as part of a complete exercise program. Check with your physician before starting any program; once you are cleared, you can begin. I recommend checking your blood pressure each time you prepare to do your resistance-training program. If your resting blood pressure starts to rise, let your physician know immediately and reduce your strength training temporarily. Recommendations for individuals with hypertension emphasize using high repetition and low resistance in the program. Circuit training is a viable option for those with hypertension.
