Although walking shoes are not required, I do recommend them because they are designed for the biomechanics of the activity. A good shoe for walking will provide comfort, shock absorption, and support, especially through the arch. Make sure that you have plenty of room in the toe box and that the heel counter fits closely around the heel to prevent slipping. Shoes and other joint protection strategies are addressed in more detail in chapter 7. Socks may not seem important, but they do add cushioning and decrease potential friction. Make sure your socks are absorbent and fit properly. Check your shoes and socks regularly for wear, and replace them when needed. Worn-out shoes can lead to overuse injuries or increase the stress on your arthritic joints, causing increased pain.
