All of the fitness components need to meet minimum levels of overload in order to stimulate an adaptive response. Cardiovascular exercises are those that make the heart and lungs work harder than normal. Although the heart and lungs work more as soon as you transition from rest to any activity (such as getting out of a chair and walking to the kitchen) such increases are normally so mild that they will not cause improvements in the cardiovascular system. The amount of overload must be enough over resting level to challenge the system, but not so much over that the body cannot adjust.
