Some people use statistics to try to figure out their chance of getting cancer or of being cured. Statistics show what happens with large groups of people. Because no two people are alike, statistics can't be used to know or predict what will happen to any one person.

There is no way to know for sure if you're going to get liver cancer. Certain factors can make one person more likely to get liver cancer than another person. These are called risk factors. However, just because a person has one or more risk factors does not mean that person will get liver cancer. In fact, a person can have all the risk factors and still not get the disease. On the other hand, a person can have no risk factors and still get liver cancer.

Doctors do not know of any way to prevent liver cancer. You should avoid risk factors as much as possible. Here are some ways to avoid risk factors.

You can have liver cancer for months or years before developing any symptoms. Symptoms of liver cancer do not usually appear until the cancer grows. When it grows, it pushes against other parts of the liver or organs in the abdomen.

The liver is the largest solid organ in the body. It weighs almost 3 pounds. The liver is located behind the ribs and under the right lung on the right side of the body. It looks like a pyramid and contains 2 segments, called lobes. The 2 lobes are called the left and right lobes. Each lobe is made up of even smaller segments.
