Thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which all or part of the thyroid gland is removed. The thyroid gland is located in the forward (anterior) part of the neck just under the skin and in front of the Adam's apple. The thyroid is one of the body's endocrine glands, which means that it secretes its products inside the body, into the blood or lymph. The thyroid produces several hormones that have two primary functions: they increase the synthesis of proteins in most of the body's tissues, and they raise the level of the body's oxygen consumption. To remove the thyroid gland, an incision is made at the front of the neck (A). Muscles and connecting tissue, or fascia, are divided (B). The veins and arteries above and below the thyroid are severed (C), and the gland is removed in two parts (D). The tissues and muscles are repaired before the skin incision is closed (E). Thyroid gland removal is surgery to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. Your thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland that lies over your trachea (the tube that carries air to your lungs. It is just below your voice box. Total thyroidectomy removes the entire gland; Subtotal or partial thyroidectomy removes part of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is part of the endocrine system. It helps your body regulate your metabolism.

My doctor is presenting me with the option of having a thyroid lobectomy or a total thyroidectomy. The likelihood is that the tissue is benign -- removal is due to very large goiter (right lobe) and large cystic mass (left lobe). What is the best way to determine which option is best?
