A corneal abrasion is a worn or scraped-off area of the outer, clear layer of the eye (cornea). The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped outer area of the eye.

A corneal abrasion occurs when there is a loss of cells from the epithelium or surface of the cornea. It is usually due to trauma but may occur without trauma such as with the overuse of contact lenses .

The cornea is the transparent area at the front of the eyeball. A corneal ulcer is an erosion or open sore in the outer layer of the cornea. It is associated with infection by a bacterium, virus, fungus, or parasite. See also corneal injury.
